Roof Repair in Round Rock: What We Fix Most and How to Tell Repair From Replace
Most Round Rock roof problems can be repaired without a full replacement. A cracked pipe boot, lifted shingles after a spring storm, loose flashing, or a small hail bruise on one slope is usually a repair. Replacement comes into play when the damage covers several slopes, the shingles are worn out across the roof, or the wood underneath is soft.
Vantage Roofing does free roof inspections in Round Rock and nearby towns like Pflugerville, Georgetown and Hutto. We'll show you photos and tell you honestly whether it needs a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all.
Why do Round Rock roofs need repair so often?
Round Rock sits in one of the more active hail corridors in Central Texas. A local extract of the NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database shows Round Rock with more one-inch-or-larger hail reports since 2021 than almost any other place in Williamson or Travis County, including stones up to four inches on September 24, 2023. Quarter-size hail returned in April 2026. Hail paths can be narrow, so one street can be hit hard while the next looks fine from the driveway.
The housing stock adds to it. U.S. Census ACS estimates put Round Rock's median year built around 2001–2002. That means a lot of original builder-grade shingle roofs from the Teravista, Forest Creek and Behrens Ranch era are now 15 to 25 years into Central Texas heat. Rubber pipe boots dry out, sealant at walls and chimneys hardens, and shingles lose granules after repeated storms. Older pockets around Old Town and Brushy Creek often carry a second or third roof cycle, where matching materials and fragile shingles make repairs trickier.
What are the most common roof repairs in Round Rock?
Most calls start with a water stain on a ceiling after rain. The stain is the symptom. The entry point is usually one of these:
Pipe boots. The rubber collar around a plumbing vent cracks in the sun. Water runs down the pipe into the attic.
Flashing. Metal at walls, chimneys, skylights and roof-to-wall joints pulls loose or loses sealant.
Wind-lifted or missing shingles. Spring and summer storms lift edges and tear tabs, especially on ridges and rakes.
Valleys. Leaves and debris from mature trees clog valleys. Water backs up under the covering.
Hail bruises. Impacts knock off granules and crack the shingle mat. Damage is easy to miss from the ground.
Nail pops. Nails that back out leave small holes that drip a little at a time.
On metal roofs we see loose screws and worn washers. On tile, cracked or slipped tiles and worn underlayment underneath. If you're not sure which system you have, we'll identify it on the inspection.
How can you tell if you have a roof leak?
Some leaks show up the same day. Others take a few storms. Look for:
Brown or yellow ceiling stains, often in a kitchen, hallway or closet under a valley or vent.
Paint that bubbles or peels near the ceiling line.
Damp insulation or dark wood in the attic after rain.
A musty smell in one room.
Shingle pieces or granules collecting at the bottom of a downspout.
Don't climb a wet or damaged roof. Take photos from the ground and from inside, and note which storm or wind direction came with the stain. That history helps us find the source faster.
Repair or replace: how do we decide on a Round Rock roof?
A repair usually makes sense when:
The problem is in one spot (one vent, one valley, one wall).
The rest of the shingles still lie flat and hold granules.
The decking feels solid when we walk it.
A replacement starts to make sense when:
Damage shows across several slopes, not just one area.
Shingles curl, crack or go bare across most of the roof.
You've had leaks in different places over time.
Soft or spongy decking shows up in more than a small patch.
Storm damage is widespread enough that documenting a claim is the honest next step.
Sometimes you don't need a roofer at all. A stain can come from an AC condensate line or a plumbing issue. If that's what we find, we'll say so.
Do you need a permit for roof repair in Round Rock?
For a standard residential re-roof, the City of Round Rock does not require a building permit. If the work changes the roof structure — new framing, a new pitch, a dormer — you need a residential remodel permit. Round Rock also requires drip edge on shingle roofs (2015 IBC Section R905.2.8.5). We install drip edge on every shingle replacement we do here.
If your address is outside city limits, in the ETJ, or in unincorporated Williamson County, call Round Rock Building Inspections to confirm who has jurisdiction before you start. Rules can differ by address.
What happens on a Vantage Roofing inspection?
History. When did you first notice it? Which rooms? After every rain, only wind-driven rain, or one storm?
Inside and attic. We look at the stain and follow the water path when we can reach the attic.
Roof walk. We check penetrations, flashing, valleys and slopes uphill of the leak, and photograph what we find.
Written estimate. You get a clear scope: repair, replace, or leave it alone for now.
Next steps. If water is coming in now, we can tarp to limit more damage. After a storm, we can help document conditions for your insurer.
The Texas Department of Insurance advises homeowners to photograph damage, make only temporary repairs until an adjuster has seen the roof, save receipts, and ask whether the policy has a separate wind-and-hail deductible. We help with the documentation side; you file the claim with your company.
Vantage Roofing backs its work with a 10-year workmanship warranty on full replacements and up to 1 year on service repairs.

Frequently asked questions
Can you come look at it first before I decide anything?
Yes. That's how most repair jobs start. Vantage Roofing comes out for a free roof inspection in Round Rock, checks the roof and the attic if possible, and takes photos. You get a written estimate and an honest recommendation. There's no pressure to decide on the spot, and if you don't need a roofer, we'll tell you.
When can someone come out for a roof repair appointment?
Call (737) 383-1768 and we'll set a time that works. If water is actively coming in, say so when you call so we can talk about temporary protection first. For a non-emergency stain or storm check, we'll schedule an inspection and walk the roof with photos before quoting any repair.
Why does my ceiling leak only when the rain comes with wind?
Wind can drive rain toward joints that stay dry in still weather. Flashing, pipe boots, ridge caps and wall transitions are common places that show up only in wind-driven rain. Tell us the storm direction and which room stains; that helps focus the inspection.
Is replacing a few missing shingles enough?
Not always. We check the surrounding shingles, underlayment and fasteners too. Replacing the missing pieces can be right when the rest of that slope is sound. If nearby shingles crack when lifted or the deck is soft, the scope needs to be wider — or replacement may be the honest answer.
Do I need a permit to repair or re-roof in Round Rock?
Usually not for a standard residential re-roof. The City of Round Rock says no permit is required for that work. A remodel permit is required if you change the roof structure. Drip edge is required on shingle roofs either way. Confirm jurisdiction if you're outside city limits.
Should I have my roof inspected after hail even if the ceiling is dry?
Yes, especially in Round Rock after a known storm path. Hail damage can sit on the covering for months before a leak shows inside. A free inspection with photos tells you whether you're looking at a small repair, widespread damage, or a roof that still looks fine.
